Water Alert: Boil your water!

All Portlanders west of the Willamette need to boil tap water

PORTLAND -- The Portland Water Bureau issued a "Boil Water Notice" Saturday for all customers west of the Willamette River, including the Valley View, Burlington and Palatine Hill Water Districts.
The Water Bureau provided this link to a map of the afffected area. Some computers may not have the software to open it.

All tap water should be boiled at full roil for at least a minute. Any stored water or ice should be tossed. The precaution should be used until further notice from the Portland Water Bureau. Further test results will be available Sunday.

The caution is caused by presence of E. Coli in Reservoir 3 at Washington Park.
Here is a prepared statement from the Portland Water Bureau.
What should I do? What does this mean to me?

DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST OR USE BOTTLE WATER. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Bring all water to a rolling boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

What is being done?

The Portland Water Bureau has taken the reservoir out of service. We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water. We anticipate resolving the problem within 24 hours.

For more information, please contact Portland Water Bureau at 503-823-7770 or 1120 SW 5th Ave., Portland, OR, 97204. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
Water Bureau spokesman Terry Black said "routine water samples collected on Wednesday November 25, 2009 from Reservoir 3 in Washington Park indicated the presence of E. coli. A confirmation sample collected on Friday November 27, 2009 also tested positive for E. coli."
Dr. Paul Lewis, tri-county deputy health office, said "If there are health effects from drinking water contamination, we expect them to be diarrhea and belly ache. Although we are hopeful that the contaminated water will not affect peoples' health, diarrhea can be a bigger problem for young children and people who have weakened immune systems. It is also important to note that the E. coli bacteria that is detected on the monitoring test may not be the same as the more notorious E. coli O157:H7, a cause of serious bacterial diarrhea."

The Latest on RAW ALMONDS

Happy Hot August Night Everyone!

I have been on a search for non irradiated, non pasteurized, or fumigated RAW almond for several months now and I finally found a place to get them!

First of all I hope you are aware of what has been happening to our almonds.

Pasteurization and Irradiation, sometimes called Cold pasteurization is now mandatory to cover up for sloppy farming practices. Instead of cleaning up the farms they sterilize the food so it has little nutritional value and may even have harmful side effects.

For more information about irradiation, please refer to the following site.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2001/07/11/irradiation-part-one.aspx

As if this isn't enough some almond producers are using propylene oxide because it has been approved by the EPA.

this is what I gleaned from wiki

Propylene oxide is a highly toxic flammable chemical compound. It was once used as a racing fuel, but that usage is now prohibited under the U.S.National Hot Rod Association rules for safety reasons. It is also used in thermobaric weapons. It is an an epoxide.

then it goes on to state

Fumigant

The United States Food & Drug Administration has approved its use to pasteurize raw almonds beginning on September 1, 2007 in response to several incidences of contamination by salmonella in commercial orchards.

(2 isolated cases, I looked it up)

And finishes with

Safety

Propylene oxide is a probable human carcinogen.

(so if it's human carcinogen, what are we doing using it on food?)

For more information please go to http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_5231.cfm

So there we have it!

All almonds in the USA are now treated in a way to kill all nutrients or to kill us!

Some of you may be asking "why buy raw almonds?"

Raw almonds, the heartbeat of all nuts, literally, have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease, a rich source of calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, protein, fiber and antioxidants to name a few. Now, these once amazing and life enhancing health benefits have become devastatingly reduced if not completely eliminated in the pasteurization process.

Remember the "raw" almonds you think you are buying at Costco and other stores are not raw and have not been raw since 2007. the worst part is they are not required to label them as pasteurized irradiated or anything else but can still call them raw.

So I finally made a connection with a place we can legally buy TRUELY RAW ALMONDS up to 100 pounds per person.

(Don't you love loopholes!)

The harvest is sometime in October but I need to have orders in by mid September.

I have to order 1,100 pounds to get the price we want and shipping at a reasonable price. so for a total (shipping included) of $3.50 a pound!

(Costco's dead Almonds are $3.26 a pound)

In my search for Truly Raw Almonds I couldn't find anything under $6 a pound ranging all the way up to $12.50, so this is a real deal! you look and see if you can find anything better!

This order is only once a year, so stock up!

We can feature a class in "sprouting" almonds and how to use them raw for those of you who are new to the raw food thing. Maybe it can be a food theme for our next meeting, (we can have a funeral for my costco dead almonds as these will not be in yet!) I even have recipes for savory and sweet almonds for snacks!

Let me know if you are interested. I am not collecting money till I get my official order form. This was just the preliminary, what's coming up, but do send me your order cause when it comes we have to move fast! This is a seasonal crop and when they are gone we have to wait till next year.

Again for Truly RAW Almonds from a reputable farm prices are $3.50 a pound, and 100 pound limit per person, we have to make the minimum order of 1100 pounds.

Bon Appetite!

Sally

Homemade Laundry Soap Recipe

Homemade Laundry Soap

Tips for Laundry Soap: We use Fels-Naptha bar soap in the homemade soap recipes, but you can use Ivory, Sunlight, Kirk’s Hardwater Castile or Zote bars. Don’t use heavily perfumed soaps. We buy Fels-Naptha by the case from our local grocer or on line. Washing Soda and Borax can normally be found on the laundry or cleaning aisle. Recipe cost approx. $2.

(I bought mine at Winco: Fels-Naptha was $1.12 a bar, Wash soda 3#7oz $3.14, Borax 4# 12oz $3.78)

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or Top load machine- best value

4 cups hot tap water

1 Fels-Naptha soap bar

1 cup washing Soda

½ cup Borax

-Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. (do not use an aluminum pot) stir continually over med-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted. (I used Med heat, I got tired of waiting!)

- fill a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to the top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean laundry soap dispenser ½ full with soap and then fill the rest of the way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel) (I skipped this step and left it in my bucket and just put ½ of this concentrated amount in my washer as recommended below)

-Optional: you can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled.

Ideas, lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons (I left mine as 5 gallons of concentrate)

Top load Machine- 5/8 cup per load (Approx 180 loads)

Front load Machine- ¼ cup per load (Approx. 640 loads!) (I only use 1/8 cup as I didn’t further dilute it)

Powdered Laundry Detergent- Top load machines

1 Fels-Naptha soap bar

1 cup washing Soda

½ cup Borax

Grate soap or break into pieces and process in a food blender until powdered. Mix all ingredients. For a light load use 1 tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load use 2 tablespoons

Yields: 3 cups detergent. (Approx. 40 loads)

Inexpensive Fabric Softener Recipes

Recipe#1

1 cup White Vinegar

Add vinegar to rinse cycle. Works great Removes residue and odors. Also help to keep washing machine and hoses fresh and clean too.

Recipe #2

1 Container of Name Brand Fabric Softener

4 inexpensive sponges cut in half

Pour entire container of softener into a 5 gallon bucket. Fill, now empty softener container, with water twice. (2 parts water to 1 part softener) Add sponges to mixture. When ready to use, wring out extra mixture from one sponge and add to the dryer as you would a dryer sheet.

More on Chia!

For those of you who are on the chia band wagon here is more good news about soaking chia!
my friend Elaine Cobb in Enterprise UT just alerted me this! WOW! (Sally F.--Beaverton Stake)

This is from NSRI (Nutritional Science Research Institute)

Important Discovery!
Germinating/Soaking
Omega 3 Chia seeds
NSRI (Nutritional Science Research Institute) made an
important discovery when germinating the
Omega 3 Chia seeds for a minimum of 12-24 hours.
The ORAC value and the antioxidant level nearly tripled
to 220 points! Normally the ORAC value of the chia seed
is 80 (vs. blueberries at 70) but when the seeds are
soaked the nutritional values increased substantially.
Here’s what to do:
A one quart glass jar and lid
1.5 T or 1 scoop of chia seeds for every ½ cup of
water
Shake the container until the seeds are suspended and
liquid begins to thicken.
Soak the seeds at room temp in water for a
minimum of 12 – 24 hours .
After the 12-24 hour period, consume
the germinated/soaked seed.
Make larger quantities then refrigerate
so you’ll have germinated seeds for
cooking etc.
Use the germinated seeds in smoothies
oatmeal, Yogurt, soup, bread, cakes or
cookie mix.
A tip from Sally, substituting chia gel by volume for eggs in cupcakes gives you a dense, fudgy (of course we made chocolate) moist delicious cupcake. (be aware that it will not rise as high s it will lack the leavening power of eggs ) Lori has done it with brownies and says they were really good. my kids preferred them to my regular "egg" cupcake. (i did use coconut oil as well and it makes everything great!)

By the way, sure enough they also discovered the dark chia has more antioxidants than the white! good thing cause it costs less!
now go soak some chia!
(anyone wanting to order the order is 1/2 full, 20 more bags and we send for it! $143.00 for 50# the beauty of wholesale!)

What's Chia??

Chia Seed - The Ancient Food of the Future

By: William Anderson

In the last twenty five years, there has been a resurrection in the definition of medicine, a resurrection that amplifies the significance of our eating habits and our lifestyle. Medicine is not only defined as a treatment for illness and disease, it is now understood to be for the prevention of illness and disease. That would mean, for example, laughter is a medicine because research found it to boost the immune system. Exercise is good medicine for its cardio-vascular stimulation, muscle toning and flexibility and expelling toxins and for giving you a feeling of well-being, all immune boosters. To express a positive attitude towards life is not only good medicine for you, it is good medicine for those in contact with you. But the most important medicine, especially for the prevention of illness and disease, is our diet. It only needs our cooperation in supplying proper hydration and the needed nutrients to effectively maintain a state of well-being.

Research has revealed that more than two thirds of all deaths in the United States are diet related. More than 50% of all deaths are caused from coronary occlusion, blockage of the blood flow to the heart and/or the brain. These are all preventable deaths according to the Journal of American Medical Association which published in 1961 that, “All coronary occlusion can be eliminated by 97% through a vegetarian diet.” Fourteen hundred American’s are dying of cancer every day. In the prestigious Advances in Cancer Research, they concluded, “At present, we have overwhelming evidence… (that) none of the risk factors for cancer is… more significant than diet and nutrition.”

Because the question of what might be the optimum diet can, at times, be emotionally charged for many people, having had a significant emotional commitment in believing they know what’s best, I would like to suspend the issues of diet and introduce you to a “super” food that all would agree on. It is known as the Chia Seed. Once valued so much that it was used as currency, this unique little seed has exceptional nutritive and structural benefits.

Chia, is familiar to most of us as a seed used for the novelty of the Chia Pet™, clay animals with sprouted Chia seeds covering their bodies. Little is known, however, of the seeds tremendous nutritional value and medicinal properties. For centuries this tiny little seed was used as a staple food by the Indians of the south west and Mexico. Known as the running food, its use as a high energy endurance food has been recorded as far back as the ancient Aztecs. It was said the Aztec warriors subsisted on the Chia seed during the conquests. The Indians of the south west would eat as little as a teaspoon full when going on a 24hr. forced march. Indians running form the Colorado River to the California coast to trade turquoise for seashells would only bring the Chia seed for their nourishment.

If you try missing a spoonful of Chia in a glass of water and leaving it for approximately 30 minutes or so, when you return the glass will appear to contain not seeds or water, but an almost solid gelatin. This gel-forming reaction is due to the soluble fiber in the Chia. Research believe this same gel-forming phenomenon takes place in the stomach when food containing these gummy fibers, known as mucilages, are eaten. The gel that is formed in the stomach creates a physical barrier between carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down, thus slowing the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar.

In addition to the obvious benefits for diabetics, this slowing in the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar offers the ability for creating endurance. Carbohydrates are the fuel for energy in our bodies. Prolonging their conversion into sugar stabilizes metabolic changes, diminishing the surges of highs and lows creating a longer duration in their fueling effects.

One of the exceptional qualities of the Chia seed is its hydrophilic properties, having the ability to absorb more than 12 times its weigh in water. Its ability to hold on to water offers the ability to prolong hydration. Fluids and electrolytes provide the environment that supports the life of all the body’s cells. Their concentration and composition are regulated to remain as constant as possible. With Chia seeds, you retain moisture, regulate, more efficiently, the bodies absorption of nutrients and body fluids. Because there is a greater efficiency in the utilization of body fluids, the electrolyte balance is maintained.

Example: Fluid and electrolyte imbalances occur when large amounts of fluids are lost resulting from vomiting, diarrhea, high fever, or more commonly from sweating? The loss of extracellular fluid occurs in these conditions. Intercellular fluid then shifts out of cells to compensate, causing abnormal distribution of electrolytes across cell membranes resulting in cellular malfunction. So. Retaining and efficiently utilizing body fluids maintains the integrity of extracellular fluids, protecting intercellular fluid balance. The results of which ensure normal electrolyte dispersion across cell membranes (electrolyte balance), maintaining fluid balances, resulting in normal cellular function.

Chia seeds are the definitive hydrophilic colloid for the 21 century diet. Hydrophilic colloids, (a watery, gelatinous, glue-like substance) form the underlying elements of all living cells. They posses the property of readily taking up and giving off the substances essential to cell life. The precipitation of the hydrophilic colloids cause cell death.

The food we eat, in the raw state, consist largely of hydrophilic colloids. When cooked on the other had, precipitates its colloidal integrity. This change in the colloidal state alters the hydration capacity of our foods so as to interfere with their ability to absorb digestive juices. If we were to eat a raw diet we wouldn’t need to introduce the addition of any hydrophilic colloid to our diet. Uncooked foods contain sufficient hydrophilic colloid to keep gastric mucosa in the proper condition. But even with raw foods, they must first be partially broken down by the digestive juices, beginning in the mouth and continuing through he upper tract, to allow the gelatinous reaction to take place. Because of this upper tract digestive process, those who suffer from slow digestion, gas formation, relaxed cardia and heartburn in which the burning is due to organic acids instead of an excess of the normal hydrochloric acid, which frequently accompanies chronic inflammation disease affecting such organs as the heart, lungs, gall bladder and appendix, are usually restricted from eating raw foods. A hydrophilic colloid incorporated with these foods may be used either in connection with the patients regular food or with whatever diet the physician feels is best suited for his patient. The patient with gastric atony or nervous indigestion who complains of heartburn and/or vomiting four to five hours after eating is often helped. There is a lessening of emptying time if the stomach and an improvement in gastric tone. A strict dietary regimen is at as necessary when the hydrophilic.

Chia seed may be used in conjunction with almost any diet your doctor or nutritionist feels is necessary for your condition. The Chia’s hydrophilic colloidal properties aid the digestion of any foods contributing to the patients suffering as a result of a sour stomach. Even if you have sensitivity to certain foods, they may be tolerated with slight discomfort or none at all if a hydrophilic colloid is made a part of your diet. The positive effects on the digestion in the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract often leads to puree their foods may find benefits from hydrophilic colloids which may lead to eliminating the necessity for pureeing. Even raw vegetables, green salads and fruits, which are largely restricted, may often be given to these patients with little or no discomfort after a short time.

There are several hydrophilic foods available that offer these natural benefits. Cactus juice, beet juice, agar, the edible seaweeds, and many proprietary preparations, which include the silica gels, mucilaginous substance of vegetables origin, are among colloids that prove effective. Each one of the above mentioned substances have one or more drawbacks. They are either too expensive, they may produce toxic side effects, bad tasting, not readily available, insufficient hydration capability, or it is indigestible.

Chia seed, a muscle and tissue builder and an energizer of endurance with extensive hydration properties, possesses none of the above disadvantage, and because if its physiochemical properties, supports effective treatment in immediate problems of digestion. Exactly why this should be true may be puzzling at first. However, if we consider the effect of unusual irritation upon the nerves of the gastrointestinal canal, it is reasonable the think that a less violent and more balanced digestion might quiet the activity of the otherwise hyperactive gut. Inasmuch as the same foods, which formerly produced irritation, may frequently be continued without harm when hydrophilic colloids are used. The relief to nerve irritation seems to offer a logical explanation.

The change, in the lower gastrointestinal tract, is due to the effect of the hydrophilic colloid and to a more complete digestion-taking place along the entire tract due to physiochemical alterations. Both factors are important, as there is undoubtedly a better assimilation of food that supports enhanced nutritional absorption while significantly extending necessary hydration as well as encouraging proper elimination.

As a source of protein, the Chia, after ingestion, is digested and absorbed very easily. This results in rapid transport to the tissue and utilization by the cells. This efficient assimilation makes the Chia very effective when rapid development of tissue takes place, primarily during growth periods if children and adolescents. Also for the growth and regeneration of tissue during pregnancy and lactation, and this would also include regeneration of muscle tissue for conditioning, athletes, weight lifters, etc.

Another unique quality if the Chia seed is its high oil content, and the richest vegetables source for the essential omega-3 fatty acid. It has approximately three to ten times the oil concentrations of most grains and one and a half to two times the protein concentrations of other grains. These oils, unsaturated fatty acids, are the essential oils your body needs to help emulsify and absorb the fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E, & K. Chia seeds are rich in the unsaturated fatty acid, linoleic, which the body cannot manufacture. When there are rich amounts of linoleic acid sufficiently supplied to the body trough diet, linoleic and arachidonic acids can be synthesized from linoleic acid.

Unsaturated fatty acids are important for respiration of vital organs and make it easier for oxygen to be transported by the blood stream to all cells, tissues, and organs. They also help maintain resilience and lubrication of all cells and combine with protein and cholesterol to form living membranes that hold the body cells together.

Unsaturated fatty acids are essential for normal glandular activity, especially of the adrenal glands and the thyroid glad. They nourish the skin cells and are essential for healthy mucus membranes and nerves. The unsaturated fatty acids function in the body by cooperating with vitamin D in making calcium available to the tissues, assisting in the assimilation of phosphorus, and stimulating the conversion of carotene into vitamin A. Fatty acids are related to normal functioning of the reproductive system. Chia sees contain beneficial long-chain triglycerides (LCT) in the right proportion to reduce cholesterol on arterial walls.

The Chia seed is also a rich source of calcium as it contains the important mineral boron, which acts as catalyst for the absorption and utilization of the calcium by the body.

Chia, as an ingredient, is a dieters dream food. There are limitless ways to incorporate the Chia seed into your diet. Chia must be prepared with pure water before using recipes. The seed will absorb 9 times it’s weight in water in less than 10 minutes and is very simple to prepare.

Food Extender/Calorie Displacer: The optimum ratio of water to seed, for most recipes, is 9 part water to 1 part seed. One pound if seed will make 10 pounds of Chia gel. This is the most unique structural quality of the Chia seed. The seed’s hydrophilic (water absorbing) saturated cells hold the water, so when it is mixed with foods, it displaces calories and fat without diluting flavor. In fact, I have found that because Chia gel displaces rather than dilutes, it creates more surface area and can actually enhance the flavor rather than dilute it. Chia gel also works as a fat replacer for many recipes.

Making Chia Gel (9to1 ratio): Put water in a sealable plastic container and slowly pour seed into water while briskly mixing with a wire whisk. This process will avoid any clumping of the seed. Wait a couple of minutes, whisk again and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes. Whisk again before using or storing in refrigerator (Gel will keep up to 2 weeks). You can add this mix to jams, jellies, hot or cold cereals, yogurts, mustard, catsup, tarter sauce, BBQ sauce, etc.. Add the gel, between 50% to 75% by volume, to any of the non-bake mentioned foods, mix well and taste. You will notice a very smooth texture with the integrity of the flavour intact. In addition to adding up to 50% to 75% more volume to the foods used, you have displaced calories and fat by incorporating an ingredient that is 90% water. Use as a fat replacer, for energy and endurance, or for added great taste, buy substituting the oil in your breads with Chia gel. Top your favorite bread dough before baking with Chia gel (for toping on baked goods, breads, cookies, piecrust, etc., reduce the water ration to 8 parts water to 1 part Chia seed) for added shelf life.

There are additional benefits from the Chia seed aside from the nutritive enhancements when used as an ingredient. It was also used by the Indians and missionaries as a poultice for gunshot wounds and other serious injuries. They would pack the wounds with Chia seeds to avoid infections and promote haling. If you place a seed or two in your eyes it will clean your eyes and will also help to clear up any infections. There is a wealth of benefits beyond the information outlined in this article and treasure-trove of benefits yet to be discovered. Chia seed, having a qualitatively unique situational richness along with a profound nutritive profile is one of man’s most useful and beneficial foods and is destined to be the Ancient Food of the Future.

to lower quantity discount.

Current quantities ordered:

Infection Fighter - 22
Essential Oils Blend - 8 We need 28 orders to keep the price

The Herb Meeting is intended to discuss any questions regarding the
products above and to give a list of my top ten pick of herbs and
why.

The meeting will be this Tuesday, May 12th at 7:30 at my house. The

Pandemic Preparedness Planning

Contributor: Lake Oswego Ward Emergency Prep Specialist

Regardless of what kind of outcome this flu has, from a preparedness standpoint - this is a great opportunity for us to think about what we'd do if it DID get crazy!

Since some people don't prepare for things unless the Church says so (I'm sure that's none of you :)) here's what the Church says!

http://providentliving.org/content/display/0,11666,8041-1-4414-1,00.html

So I want to hear what steps you and your family are taking to stay ahead of this game?

Make your own charcoal!

Additional information on Charcoal:

It is easy to make your own charcoal! Because, if given the circumstances are at their worst- you can't buy any and you've run out...then this is important to know so you can then make your own.

Very simple instructions for direct method:
http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/charcoal/

This site features the indirect method:
http://www.velvitoil.com/Charmake.htm

I just put "make your own charcoal" in the Google search window, to find these, you may want to study additional sites as there are more out there which vary in illustrations or pictures and directions. It is handy to have this information on hand just in case you find yourself needing charcoal and can't get any the way you're used to.

Heat, Light and Cooking In An Emergency

http://www.nationalterroralert.com/heatlightcooking/

Charcoal
Charcoal is the least expensive fuel per BTU that the average family can store. Remember that it must always be used out of doors because of the vast amounts of poisonous carbon monoxide it produces. Charcoal will store for extended period of time if it is stored in air tight containers. It readily absorbs moisture from the surrounding air so do not store it in the paper bags it comes in for more than a few months or it may be difficult to light. Transfer it to airtight metal or plastic containers and it will keep almost forever.

Fifty or sixty dollars worth of charcoal will provide all the cooking fuel a family will need for an entire year if used sparingly. The best time to buy briquettes inexpensively is at the end of the summer. Broken or torn bags of briquettes are usually sold at a big discount. You will also want to store a small amount of charcoal lighter fluid (or kerosene). Newspapers will also provide an excellent ignition source for charcoal when used in a funnel type of lighting device.

To light charcoal using newspapers use two or three sheets, crumpled up, and a #10 tin can. Cut both ends out of the can. Punch holes every two inches around the lower edge of the can with a punch-type can opener (for opening juice cans). Set the can down so the punches holes are on the bottom. Place the crumpled newspaper in the bottom of the can and place the charcoal briquettes on top of the newspaper. Lift the can slightly and light the newspaper. Prop a small rock under the bottom edge of the can to create a good draft. The briquettes will be ready to use in about 20-30 minutes. When the coals are ready remove the chimney and place them in your cooker. Never place burning charcoal directly on concrete or cement because the heat will crack it. A wheelbarrow or old metal garbage can lid makes an excellent container for this type of fire.

One of the nice things about charcoal is that you can regulate the heat you will receive from them. Each briquette will produce about 40 degrees of heat. If you are baking bread, for example, and need 400 degrees of heat for your oven, simply use ten briquettes.

To conserve heat and thereby get the maximum heat value from your charcoal you must learn to funnel the heat where you want it rather than letting it dissipate into the air around you. One excellent way to do this is to cook inside a cardboard oven. Take a cardboard box, about the size of an orange crate, and cover it with aluminum foil inside and out. Be sure that the shiny side is visible so that maximum reflectivity is achieved. Turn the box on its side so that the opening is no longer on the top but is on the side. Place some small bricks or other noncombustible material inside upon which you can rest a cookie sheet about two or three inches above the bottom of the box. Place ten burning charcoal briquettes between the bricks (if you need 400 degrees), place the support for your cooking vessels, and then place your bread pans or whatever else you are using on top of the cookie sheet. Prop a foil-covered cardboard lid over the open side, leaving a large crack for air to get in (charcoal needs a lot of air to burn) and bake your bread, cake, cookies, etc. just like you would in your regular oven. Your results will amaze you.

To make your own charcoal, select twigs, limbs, and branches of fruit, nut and other hardwood trees; black walnuts and peach or apricot pits may also be used. Cut wood into desired size, place in a large can which has a few holes punched in it, put a lid on the can and place the can in a hot fire. When the flames from the holes in the can turn yellow-red, remove the can from the fire and allow it to cool. Store the briquettes in a moisture-proof container. Burn charcoal only in a well-ventilated area.

Do you have a plan???

Great Goal Idea for April-May!!
Make an Emergency Preparedness Plan

To be ready for evacuation, be it from a fire, flood, or for some other emergency reason, making a plan is important. Your plan should include preparing for emergencies at home, in the car, and at work or school. Make an evacuation plan for your home so that each family member knows how to get out safely and where to meet. Let your kids help in drawing up the plan - and be sure everyone practices. There is a good example you can use at http://ready.adcouncil.org/beprepared/

Emergency Food Bars Website

Contributor: Erin S.

A friend of mine from Woodburn ward called me today. She was ordering a bunch of bars off this website - 3600cal emergency food bars and I ordered a few through her. They have a 5 year shelf life, ready to eat, no cholesterol, no nuts for people with allergies.

Anyways, I think they are a great item for 72 hour kits or to keep in the car in case of emergencies... the website also sells emergency water, flashlights, radios, hygiene kits, bigger items, etc, etc, etc for all types of emergencies.

It's at quakekare.com. It has info and products that people might be interested in taking a look at.

Preparing for Disaster!

Hello all! I'm attaching a link to the Washington County Office of Consolidated Emergency Management (a mouthful!) flyers for preparedness. These flyers are a gem to have! Especially if you would like to motivate your neighborhood to get prepared - there are some great ways to encourage your neighbors or distribute flyers/ideas to them. There is one similar to the other charts that have been posted about preparing month by month, too. Happy browsing!

Group Order: Organic Pasta, Tomatoes & Agave

GROUP ORDER COORDINATOR: Cathy Shauklas (Meridian Park Ward)

ORDER DEADLINE: March 23, 2009 (Money/checks made out to "Cathy Shauklas")

To see and download order form, click on: ORDER FORM * (It should be working now!)

To learn more about the products and ingredients, please click on: Bionaturae

Cathy: I have become aware of an opportunity to order a very high quality organic whole wheat pasta from Tuscany, Italy in many shapes in bulk. A LDS woman, Colleen, in Utah will actually place our order since she has a wholesale account with the manufacturer in Italy but the order will be shipped to my home, Cathy, in Tualatin. There is also the option to order gluten-free pasta and agave syrup and canned tomatoes. If we place a large bulk order (approx.400 cases) then the shipping is FREE. I think the requirement is actually by weight but 400 cases usually meets that weight requirement. The prices listed are only guaranteed through March so I would need to receive everyone’s order including money by Monday, March 23, 2009 in order to mail a check to Colleen in Utah. She only places a large bulk order once a year.

It is the best organic whole-grain pasta and organic tomatoes in the world. Typical pricing for this pasta is fairly expensive. We will order sufficient quantities with this purchase to obtain exceptional pricing (see order form). This pasta is made using organic whole grain and the best known artisan practices. It is recognized as one of Italy’s finest whole-grain pastas and is generally sold as an expensive gourmet item. It is made affordable through bulk purchase.

The whole, peeled canned tomatoes come packed in tomato puree with basil, rather than water. Both are excellent food storage items as well as nutritious and delicious.

The agave is XAgave brand, considered to be the finest organic agave nectar on the market today. It retails for more than double the price offered in this bulk order. Agave is a low calorie and low glycemic index sweetener, considered by many to have no rival.

*If you have questions or problems opening up the order form please call Rebecca Webb or email me at rebeccaja.webb@gmail.com
